Camp FAQ

What happens in a Mad Science Camp?

Your child will become a junior scientist for the week, having the opportunity to experience a variety of science adventures. Children will be able touch, see, hear, smell and taste what science is really all about. Mad Science always delivers a unique curriculum developed by dedicated science educators. Our camps offer a daily combination of in-class discovery and exploration, outdoor games and physical activities and hands-on applications of the scientific principles presented.
We use an inquiry-based approach that allows even the youngest camper to enjoy our learning environment. Children will create a variety of take-home projects and participate in activities while exploring how science affects the world around us. And, we provide everything your child will need.

How long has Mad Science been running camps?

Our programs are created by a team of professional scientists and teachers at our head office, in Montreal, QC. Millions of children in over 160 locations, in 22 countries have enjoyed our programs. Mad Science of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill has been running camps in this area for 14 years.

What is the child to instructor ratio?

The child to instructor ratio varies depending on enrollment. We always have at least one counselor for every 10 students.

What ages are the camps designed for?

Most of our camps are designed for rising first graders to sixth graders. Our “Red Hot Robots” targets 8-12 year olds and our "Let's Get Growing" camp targets ages 4-6.

Are different aged children in the same camp?

Yes and no. A few of our camps are divided by age, but, for the most part, they are not. Also, our low child to instructor ratio ensures that there is always plenty of help. All Mad Science activities are specifically designed to be conducted in an age and grade appropriate manner. Activities are comprised of large group discussion and activities, small group work and individual projects. Depending on the nature of the activity, our instructors usually split the campers by grade level to ensure that the children are in small groups of the same grade. We may use the buddy system where an older camper will help a younger camper with a challenging activity after they have completed their own. Please see the online registration form or call us to see which camps are divided by age.

Who are the Mad Science camp instructors?

Mad Science recruits teachers, teacher's assistants and current college students majoring in education with previous experience with elementary aged children in other settings. Many of our instructors work for us in our after-school programs during the school year. Our instructors are required to complete extensive training. All Mad Science instructors must also pass a series of state and national criminal background checks. The main characteristic of our instructors is that they all share a love of working with children and the desire to spark and nurture their campers’ imaginations!

Do you offer extended care?

Check with the different locations on their policies. Some information can be found on our Camp Locations page.

How do I register my child for a camp?

Online registration for some camps can be found at Most of our camps are conducted in partnership with other organizations and groups. Each location usually handles registrations, selects the camp offerings and sets prices.

How soon do I need to register to reserve a space for my child?

Some camps and dates fill very quickly, while some may have spaces available up to the start date. We recommend that you register as soon as possible, because space availability depends on how quickly everyone else signs up!

What is your refund policy?

Check with the different host locations on their policies. If Mad Science is sponsoring the camp, a $50 cancellation fee will be charged for cancellations within 4 weeks of the start of the camp. If a Mad Science sponsored camp does not get sufficient enrollment to hold a camp, a full refund will be promptly issued.

Can I sign my child up for more than one camp?

Yes, in fact, we encourage it. Each camp is completely different so your child can enjoy them all without repeating activities. Last year, many children initially registered for only one camp. After they discovered how much they enjoyed our activities, they attempted to register for additional camps. Due to the popularity of many of our themes and weeks, several children were disappointed when the additional camps were already sold out.

Do you offer sibling or multi-camp discounts?

Check with the different host locations on their policies.

My child has attended a Mad Science camp before. If he/she took a particular camp, will it be the same camp that he/she has taken before?

Mad Science has multiple camps to choose from--allowing a camper to have a totally different experience every summer. We update our camps so there may be a few new activities even if it is the same basic camp. Some children take the same camp again and still enjoy it equally well.

My child has taken a Mad Science camp before, but I do not remember which one.

Call us and we will be happy to look it up for you.

Does Mad Science have a minimum enrollment requirement?

The minimum number of campers necessary to hold a camp is 10. Mad Science tries to inform parents as soon as possible should it appear that a camp will not reach its minimum enrollment. On these occasions, we will offer priority enrollment in other camps. Contact us for additional information on camp cancellations.

What should my child bring/wear to camp?

Mad Science provides all the equipment and materials for both the in-class activities and the take home projects. All you need to provide is a child who is ready to have fun! Children should dress comfortably for that day's weather. We ask that children not wear open toed shoes to a Mad Science camp, specifically no flip-flops. Also, as we will be outside on a number of occasions, please do not dress your child in any clothes that you do not want to get dirty. You may wish to apply sunscreen or insect repellent, or send these items with your child. A hat and/or sunglasses may also be useful. Pack your child’s favorite snack items and drinks for half-day camps. And, clearly mark your child’s name on all items brought to camp.
For full-day camps, we require parents to send a lunch and snacks. PLEASE AVOID PEANUT BASED FOODS. Please clearly mark your child's name on all items he/she brings to the camp.

Medical Information about your Camper

Prior to actual attendance at a Mad Science full-day summer camp, we require certain medical information from you regarding your camper. This is to assist the camp instructor with knowledge of specific considerations for your camper.

You must be aware that all summer-camp activities involve some risk, and, by registering for a camp, there is an assumption of risk made by the participant. Mad Science is dedicated to securing safe facilities for our camps and using personnel and equipment that is designed to be safe. However, Mad Science instructors are NOT trained in provision of medical services of any kind.
By enrolling your child in a Mad Science camp, you do agree to not hold Mad Science Group, its Franchisees, Agents, Representatives, Facilities, Employees, Managers, Contractors and Instructors liable for any medical emergencies or conditions your child may experience, related directly or indirectly to a camp.

Mad Science T-Shirts and other items

Mad Science may offer custom designed T-shirts for our campers depending on availability. After all, your Mad Science experience is not complete without a wardrobe or branded gizmo! These are FREE of cost to you and are not included in camp-fees.

Are these the only locations where you will be holding your camps this summer?

Maybe not. We are in discussion with many locations to provide our Mad Science camps. Please look at our website on a regular basis as we will be updating our schedule as soon as additional locations are added. Also, if you have a particular location in mind, please bring it to our attention.

Start your own Mad Science camp
