Mad Science Party Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What do kids do at a Mad Science birthday party?

During the first 40-45 minutes, the Mad Scientist will engage children with amazing science demonstrations that are conducted with the help of your birthday child and guests. Some examples of experiments that may be included are: fitting a hardboiled egg into an impossibly small space, seeing flash paper disappear, or watching a Mad Scientist turn juice to water using only their breath. During the final 10-15 minutes of the party, the kids will make slime or silly putty to take home. Adding on a grande finale like rocket launch or cotton candy will add 10-15 minutes to the length of your party.

Where are Mad Science parties held?

Our Mad Scientist will come to wherever you locate the party. In addition to homes, we conduct parties at community centers, restaurants, parks, the child’s classroom and other locations. Please let us know where the party will be held when you book the party. You can also choose to have your party at the Mad Science Party Lab - we are located at 1019 Passport Way in Cary, NC 27513.

How far in advance do I need to book my party?

Our party schedule fills up quickly. We suggest you book well in advance to get the date and time you want. Generally, at least 3-4 weeks in advance is recommended.

What if I want to book a party less than two weeks prior to the party date?

Your options will be limited and we may be unable to confirm the party at the time of your call.

What do I need to do to make a reservation?

You can fill out an online request form by clicking on the “Book now” button. We will respond to your request one business day. You can also call us at (919) 858-8988 and we’ll be happy to schedule your party over the phone. We require a $150 deposit to book your party and accept Visa and MasterCard. Your deposit is fully refundable up to 10 business days before your party, and $100 is refundable up to 2 business days before your party.

What time can I have my party?

On Saturdays and Sundays we have set party times of 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m., 2:15 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 5:15 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Parties may also be scheduled Monday-Friday at any time. All dates and times are subject to availability. We recommend inviting guests for at least 15 minutes before the Mad Scientist begins.

Do you conduct parties in my area?

Mad Science covers the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill area. A travel charge may apply outside of these areas.

Do I need to know the exact number of kids attending my party to book it?

No. All we need is the maximum number of children you expect to attend. We ask that you plan for the largest number of children expected. On the day of the party, you will be charged only for the number of kids that actually attend and participate by making slime. For parties expecting over 20 kids we may require you book an additional instructor, the fee for which is not removed even if less than 20 kids attend.

Do you have any themed parties?

All our themes revolve around science. If you have another party theme, we can notify the Mad Scientist, and he/she will do his/her best to incorporate your theme into the experiments and language that is used.

What if my child has attended a Mad Science party before?

We have the programming to avoid repeating a party. When booking the party, tell us about what your child has experienced so that we can prevent repeating the experiments they saw as a party guest or during their previous birthday party.

When will the Mad Scientist arrive?

The Mad Scientist will arrive at least 15 minutes early to set up. He/she will be ready to start the show at the time you booked. It is best to start your party at least 15 minutes before your Mad Science show is scheduled to start, to ensure the Mad Scientist is able to start on time.

What kind of space is needed? Do I need to provide the Mad Scientist with anything?

There are no hassles, no worries and no mess with a Mad Science party. The Mad Scientist will arrive early to set-up the equipment and will clean-up at the conclusion of the party—leaving the party site exactly as they found it. What you will need to provide includes:
-Access to electricity and water (a kitchen sink will do).
-A small table (e.g. card table) to set up our equipment.
-An area where the children can sit on the floor with space between them and the display table.
-The ability to darken the room is preferable. Let us know if this is not possible when booking the party.

How much space is needed for the rocket launch?

The Mad Scientist will need a medium to large sized back yard or open space to launch the rocket. If you are not sure whether you have sufficient space, you can always add the rocket launch and then the Mad Scientist will assess whether or not it is safe to launch the rocket on the day of the party. You will not be charged for the upgrade if the rocket cannot be launched safely.

Once I have scheduled my party, can I make changes to it later?

Any changes to your party must be scheduled at least five business days before your party and are subject to availability. Contact Mad Science immediately when the number of children attending changes dramatically, to add goody bags, to add Grand Finales or to change the party location.

Is it okay to have other activities going on while the Mad Scientist is performing?

The Mad Scientist will begin at the scheduled start time and continue until our portion of the entertainment is finished. We will not be able to stop for any other activities (ex. food or cake). Please plan accordingly. If you plan on having a large number of adult guest, we ask that you set aside a separate room for them so that party goers are not distracted from the Mad Scientist's presentation.

What if it rains the day of my party?

If it rains on the day of your party, the Mad Scientist will call to see if there is an alternate indoor location to conduct the party.

Can I have the phone number of my Mad Scientist?

We will provide you with a number to contact someone outside of office hours before the weekend of your event.

For what ages are your parties appropriate?

Our parties are appropriate for children between 4 to 11 years of age. Younger siblings generally watch, but do not actively participate in the party and should not make a take home project.

When do I pay?

We require a $150 deposit to book your party. At the end of your party, you will pay the Mad Scientist the remaining balance, plus for the amount of goody bags you purchase. You can pay with cash, check, or pay by credit card: http://triangle.madscience.org/payment.aspx

What if I order more or less Goody Bags than are needed?

You only pay for the number of Goody Bags used. Please make sure to request the maximum number needed.

Is a gratuity for the instructor customary?

Yes, however tipping the instructor is up to your discretion and is not included in the party package pricing (except for parties with over 30 kids). A gratuity for good to excellent service usually ranges between 10% and 20%. When rewarding the instructor, please keep the tip separate from the balance that is due Mad Science.
